Students in Aviation is donating $2,750 of the total $11,000 scholarship for one of our SIA students to get their pilots license.

From Vonda Benson:

I am one of the Juneau County EAA Ch 1365’s members who help with the Ray Aviation Scholarships that our chapter is able to give out.

What is the Ray Aviation Scholarship?

EAA Headquarters gives scholarships to local EAA chapters who are in good standing and apply for these scholarships, and we select a candidate that we help mentor.  Most of the time in this area, the student can get their certificate within the $11,000.  The scholarship recipient’s family would need to be able to pay any additional amount, if it would require more than that, if needed for him/her to complete it.

What all is required of me if I get selected?

Ask any pilot – getting your Private Pilot Certificate takes a lot of work and dedication.  For this scholarship, you are required to obtain it within one year of when EAA approves you.  That timeframe makes it difficult to get while involved with sports and work.

So really, for one year – you would need to be willing to put all your efforts into getting the written test completed and your flight training and checkride completed.  With school, it leaves weekends and evenings after school.  Weather doesn’t always cooperate, so you need to have flexibility in your schedule for when you can do lessons.

This really is a family commitment.  It requires parent involvement with our chapter, as well as you attending monthly meetings, youth events we hold a few times a month, and volunteering a few hours a month.

You are a representative of the Ray Aviation Scholarship and have opportunities to appear on the local radio station, be on social media, etc, representing youth in aviation!

Where would I do my flight training at?

Because this is with our Juneau County EAA Chapter, the mentor team prefers you do your flight training in Juneau County.  The Flight Instructor has to attend the monthly mentor meetings with you and has to be committed to doing everything within their means to help you finish within the required year timeframe.

If you are interested in knowing more and applying for this scholarship – please have your parent email eaachapter1365@gmail.com asking for more information and the application for the Ray Aviation Scholarship no later than Friday 1/26/24.  Our mentor team will talk with your parents more about this opportunity and then get you the application.

We will be interviewing applicants around the first or second week of February.
